If it wasn't for having to go to work during the day it would have actually been an ubercoolische weekend. So in reverse order of what when down....

wed.13 // Less Than Jake @ Clutch Cargos
The little kids were in attendance to see some old(ish) Ska/Punk and somewhere in between the ages were my friends and I. Gazeebo was amped to see one of his favorite bands, and English 1/2/3 (2 & 3 on loan for 10days) were along for an American experience, though English 2 had seen LTJ in London a few years back. The show was your basic LTJ show, good songs, good crowd, and a good show. Unfortunately for me I haven't been polishing up on my LTJ, so there were only a handful of songs that really got me excited. After the show the Englishes and I went to JDs to meet up with some friends, and wow was it... hmmm a completely opposite crowd from who I usually hang out, that's a nice way to state it. Only hung out there for a pint then it was back to the Compound.

tues.12 // day of rest and pint(s)
Easy night off. Worked late, then went out for some tasty pizza, pomme frites, and stout at Cinq ('sank' for the French challenged) in Royal Oak.

mon.11 // Handsome Boy Model School & K-OS @ Blind Pig
After a day at work and an hour work on Minitron, it was off to AA to check out some quality hip-hop. The Blind Pig was packed as Gazeebo and I rolled in. A few minutes, 1 t-shirt purchased, and 1 beer later K-OS hit the stage and WOW. Think the Roots mixed with some 70's Motown, sprinkle in a little reggae and add a the zest of Royale Crown Revue and somehow you end up with K-OS. K-OS was definitely the musical highlight of the evening, there is just something about inventive hip-hop in front of a full band.

Handsome Boy Modeling School (Dan The Automater and Prince Paul) on the other hand put on a fun show with covers of their own songs using live instruments and recorded vocals set to flash animation, since most of their songs are preformed by various artists making an all live tour too expensive and a logistical nightmare. In between the fake mustaches and wine drinking their were comedy sketches about becoming a handsome boy and sales pitches on going to their school. All in all, Handsome Boy Modeling School was a very entertaining set of theatrics mixed with some quality songs. A hard show to explain, but definitely worth checking out if they haven't rolled through your town yet

sun.10 // Ash & The Bravery @ The Magic Stick
Rolled in with Babe a couple minutes after 9p and to our dismay Ash was already on stage, luckily we only missed a couple songs... apparently the tour was a split headliner but nobody told anyone. For those not into Ash, you should. I never really listened to them but their new CD 'Meltdown' is insanely good, if you like the Foo Fighters you must check out this CD. Anyway, back to the show. Ash played for just under an hour, which went by way too fast, and played a nice mix of new and old songs. During their performance we met up with English 1/2/3 and ran into Uncle Grambo (read his review of the show here). After Ash's furious set Babe and I tracked down Dutch and the Mr. as we hung out by the stage door to try and track down Charlotte (Chaz) of Ash. After a few minutes Charlotte appeared and Dutch pounced her, after a few seconds of awkward looks on Charlotte's face as Dutch explained how we know her in a round about way (all to do with the great movie 'Shaun of the Dead')she smiled and came over to say hi to the rest of us. Another few minutes later and Charlotte invited us to go bowling with the band downstairs in the Garden Bowl. Babe and I decided we would meet up later since The Bravery were about to take the stage.

Looking like a mix of James Dean and Morrissey, The Bravery hit the stage. Mixing their take of post-punk, garage, with an elctro twist, The Bravery's CD is quite entertaining, and 'Honest Mistake' is one of the best singles of the year so far. However live they seemed to lose the 'ectro twist' and came off a little flat. Not a bad show by any means, just not great. Their relatively limited experience playing live definitely shined through, this is why I don't usually see bands that have only one album out. If there next CD is any good and they continue touring, The Bravery might turn into a good if not great band.

After the show, Babe and I headed down to say bye to Dutch and the Mr. Somehow the Ash bowlathon had yet to begin, so I was drafted into action. A few frames into the game Dutch was destroying the rest of us, I imagine the band would site their performance on a lost of focus caused by their adoring fans asking for pictures and autographs. In all actuality, it was just a fun game of bowling with a group of people who couldn't bowl well, but could drink well. Towards the end of the game The Bravery took up a lane over from us, and started their own attempt to bowl. As our game came towards an end it was time for Dutch, the Mr.. Babe and I to head home.

sat.9 // M-nus & Spectral @ Oslo
An evening of BBQ turned into a night of blips, bleeps, and bass as STerry, Rice and I headed down to Oslo around 11:30p to check out Magda & Audion (Matthew Dear) down at everyone's favorite Sushi/Club. $15 at the door was a harsh reminder of how great Untitled. and the old Corktown nights were, but hey it was only the second time I paid to see a show at Oslo. Upon entering Oslo the place was already getting busy, so we made out way to bar to try and grab a drink. Ten minutes later with Asahi in hand we started our search to find Manders, Dr. McKenzie, and Gazeebo, who ended up were just finishing some tasty food upstairs. Once their bill was paid we head back to the basement to catch the end of Todd Osborne banging set. Around 12:30 or so Matthew Dear took over with some LIVE pounding techno, mixed in with just a slight bit of his trademark distorted house. Since this was a set under his Audion moniker, it was harder and more bangin then the last few sets I've seen him perform. I was really diggin his set, as was Rice & STerry, Gazeebo and the Dr. weren't all that into. Sometime around 2a, STerry and Rice took off and Magda took over with a Final Scratch set. The Polish Ice Princess was laying down some of her classic minimal techno punk funk, great as always, unfortunately we are all old so by 2:40 or so it was time for our tired, smokey asses to head home.

--- Sorry if some of the sentences ramble, but I think that is the most I've written since graduating, and I really don't feel like grammar checking at the moment ---

Fight the Power

Mechwarrior coming soon to a street near you

Got to love the Japanese. Instead of the usual clever mash of two or three songs, RX adds a political slant. RX mashes up two or three songs as the instrumental track, and then lays over remixed samples of Dubya, Kerry, and who ever else RX wants to take a stab at. Sometimes the samples create a whole new song, and on some of the tracks the president is singing the original lyrics. Great production and very funny. I must warn some of you out there, I listen to and enjoy some strange music so other then M.I.A. I don't blame you if you don't like it.

M.I.A. - The site will tell you all about her, but if this is what Sri Laken war refugees sound and look like, we need more of their shit. Mix Dancehall, Grime, Hip-Hop, and a little world music flavor and you get M.I.A. Her debut album (iTunes link will be added soon) is solid and her mixtape with Diplo titled 'Piracy Funds Terrorism' is excelllent (email if you want a copy).

Venetian Snares - Think Aphex Twin addicted to Drum and Bass and you'll getting a feeling of this Austrian mind warper and booty shaker. If you don't like it dark and strange this might not be the best music for you. But if you aren't easily scared or you are open to music d/l his live mixes from his understyled but fast website.

Fennesz - Thrown into the same category as Vladislav Delay, Fennesz might not be quite as cool or versatile (see Luomo, Delay's sexy house moniker). A split decision between me for not posting anything in a week and Ticketmaster. Well I think Ticketmaster should get a lifetime achievement award in being lame. Their most recent offense is their demanding of Record Time (local Detroit record store) to stop selling tickets to Tickemaster shows. The real ad, though not completely seamless in execution has a warm feel to it that makes you want a new GTi. The fake ad, well some may find it insulting, I personally find it humorous and quite well... executed for it's very minimal budget of a reported $600. Oh and for those that are interested, VW got quite angry at the makers of the fake ad threatening to sue them, but fortunately they all decided on an apology instead of financial damages.

Coachella Line-Up Announced

America's only true answer to Europe's amazing music festivals, Coachella has announced their line-up for this year. Where to begin. There is the return of Nine Inch Nails, Bauhuas, Gang of Four and the Cocteau Twins! New Order is peeking their heads out for the first time in a few years, and Detroit is rocking the party with three great acts, Mathew Dear, Wolf Eyes, and Amp Fidler. Add in a couple great British bands (Bloc Party, The Doves, British Sea Power,The Futureheads,Coldplay), mix with a couple awesome American bands (The Bravery, Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, Weezer, Radio 4, Fantamos), a dash of Canada (Tegan and Sara, Sloan), and a healthy dose of hip-hop (MF Doom, Aesop, Beans, Jean Grae, Buck 65).... and this is to just name a few of the acts. Plus there is the giant tent full of electronic music, from avante-garde to big beat to tacky trance, it is all represented. With Movement possibly not happening this year, this year might be the year that Detroiters in droves make their way out to California for Coachella on April 30 & May 1st.

Clip of the Week 1/28

If you like or are in awe of breakdancing then this clip will amaze you, as it did I. Luckily Chicago, Cleveland, and Philadelpia aren't to far away. The latter city will be hosting me and a group of Detroiters for the Saturday show. If you haven't heard of Flogging Molly I would strongly suggest giving them a listen to even if you usually like anything related to punk. For those who have heard them, it is well worth the drive to see them live. Added bonus, the tour is being sponored by Guinness. For tour dates and more info click here.

Monoone CD Player

Monoone has created one of the smoothest looking CD players to date.
